A UI 8 update of Samsung brings support for a new split screen mode that makes it easier to switch between apps, and it acts as the first preview to come in Android 16.
Split-screen multitasking in Android has not changed a ton over the years. On the phone, you can have two apps with a ratio of 50/50 or 75/25 at a time. In Samsung’s One UI 8 update, however, there is a new option.
A 90:10 split means that you can essentially carry an app with the entire display, but tap to jump into another app immediately under the display or at the top. This is faster than using the recipes menu or even gestures, while avoiding specific downside of traditional split-screen multitasking.
This idea is very similar – perhaps inspired by the open canvas in oxygenos, which allows the apps to be effectively expanded beyond the display, but showing them to show them to look quickly with a sliver. OnePlus brought this feature in its traditional slab smartphone after debuting on foldables and tablets earlier this year, and it works in the same way in this preview.

In those buildings, which were required to facilitate the “10%” app to manually enable, cinematography in a UI 8 was similar to what we are looking at, suggesting that Samsung has created the support at the top of the support that Google is preparing for Android as a whole.
A UI 8 will debut for some time on Samsung’s Galaxy Z fold 7 and Flip 7 for some time, while the Galaxy S25 users in select areas can now sign up for beta.
What do you think about this new split-screen option?
