With recent software updates, Apple has made some major changes in the way its stock mail app appears and working on the iPhone, iPad and MAC. How does Apple mail work eager to roll these changes back and before update? Keep reading to know how it is done.

When Apple released iOS 18.1, it added a priority message feature in the mail app for equipment with Apple Intelligence. Then in iOS 18.2, it gave us new categories that automatically sort your email into four different classes: primary, transactions, updates and promotions. Change also added contact photos and business logo to interact in your inbox.

With the release of iOS 18.4, iPados 18.4, and Macos Sequoia 15.4, Apple has now fully rolled out these changes in iPhone, iPad and Mac. Fortunately, if you do not like the new mail interface, Apple has also included ways to bring back the old functionality for users. Let’s break it.

How to disable mail categories

See new categories, while helpful for some, your email can not suit the management style. For example, it has attracted criticism to initiate complexity where many users value simplicity and prediction. A major issue is how the mail now organizes email and how long users are accustomed to processing their messages through a colonial inbox view.

Categories physically do not take the email out of the inbox, but they impose a new view and functional structure that can feel unknown and inconsistent, especially when the emails appear in several places simultaneously.

The relationship between primary and priority messages combines confusion, overlapping but with uniform functionality, and badges that only reflect the most of the new mail. And for those users who eat in silo apps or depend on the feed-like view of their inboxes, this layered system can feel like a solution in search of a problem-more disruptive than a assistant, and how many people actually manage their emails with out of the sink.

On the iPhone and iPad, you can swipe to the left to the categories to switch to the “all mail” scene (the same option can be found on the right side of the new category button on Mac). But if you want to remove the categories completely, then follow these steps:

  1. Open the mail app on your iPhone or iPad.
  2. Tap More Button (three dots) in the upper right corner of your inbox.
  3. On iPhone/iPad, select list View From the pop-up menu.

More menu also contains the “about categories” section, where you can see how your messages have been classified during the last week, but there is no option to tell the mail app if you believe that an email is placed in the wrong category.

On Mac, there is a more button (three dots) at the top of the inbox scene. Click on it, and you will see the option to uncheck Show mail categories,

You can also find the same option in the mail menu bar (See ➝ Mail categories show,

Once you switch to the list scene, your inbox will come back to show all emails in chronological order, as was done earlier. Changes are immediately effective. While the classification is not correct, it is something that will improve Apple over time. If you want to try it again later, you can always switch the categories back using the same menu.

How to get rid of contact photos in mail

iOS 18 Mail App
Contact photos have been added to the mail app so that you can make it easier to identify all the emails received. However, if Apple cannot identify a business, or there is not an associated photo in contact, it can make your inbox a little mess.

Fortunately, you can easily close small photos by following these steps:

  1. Open the setting app on your iPhone or iPad.
  2. Swipe and tap under the menu Apps,
  3. Search or scroll Match In the list of apps.
  4. Under the “Message List”, togle further switch Show contact photos,

setting

Just you need to do it on iPhone and iPad. To restore contact pictures, just turn on the same option in settings. In iOS 18.5, currently in beta, the Apple Mail app will add more convenient options to disable contact photos.

If you want to get rid of mail contact photos on Mac, just click See mail ➝ In menu bar, and uncheck Contact photo Option in the dropdown menu.

How to disable priority message

Apple intelligence support devices will show priority emails in primary inboxes. The idea behind the convenience is that it lets you see what is first important. However, the underlying AI is not completely out, and may occur when the mail flags are junk mail – or the worst position, even the fishing scam – as a priority message.

To avoid such scenarios, you can close the priority in the following way:

  1. Tap on iPhone/iPad More Button (three dots) in the upper right corner of your inbox.
  2. Remove the right mark Priority,

On Mac, just click See mail ➝ In menu bar, and uncheck Priority message Option in the dropdown menu.

Note that this option will not appear on equipment without apple intelligence support.

Penetration

As Apple continues to refine the mail experience on its platforms, it is clear that the company is laying groundwork for more intelligent and organized inboxes. But with such broad changes, user preferences can be easily ignored. Thankfully, Apple has provided ways to disable or return many new features, offering a degree of adaptation, which has not always been guaranteed in the previous updates.

While the current implementation may not suit everyone – and in some situations the users may leave completely confused – hopefully apple will listen to feedback and will infiltrate the system clever, more flexible and less in the future updates.
