Switch 2 has had a fantastic launch globally, but its success in Japan has been especially remarkable. It has already become the fastest-selling console in the country’s history, even beating the mighty PlayStation 2.
At launch, the Switch 2 sold 947,931 units in Japan, surpassing the 630,552 units sold by Sony’s PlayStation 2 during its debut. Now we have data from its second week, which reveals some interesting insights. Sales did seem to slow a bit at one point after the initial burst, but all the same, the total units sold in Japan are 1,101,136.
\Thanks to this strong performance, the Switch 2 has already outsold the entire lifetime sales of the Xbox Series family in Japan — which includes the Series X (320,762 units), Series S (337,811 units), and the Series X Digital Edition (20,854 units). It has also overtaken the PS5 Pro, which has sold 221,181 units.
Given Xbox’s historically weak presence in the Japanese market, this might not come as a huge surprise to some. Still, it’s pretty astonishing that Nintendo managed to outpace the entire Microsoft console family in such a short time.
Of course, the Switch 2 still has some ground to cover if it wants to surpass the lifetime sales of the standard PS5 in Japan, which currently stand at 5,690,661 units. But considering the explosive start Switch 2 has had, it might not take too long to get there.
