Threads has taken another step in differentiating itself from Instagram by launching a word-blocking filter independent to it. According to Adam Mosseri, the Instagram chief, custom filters that were recently added are in the Hidden Words section on Threads. This feature allows users to block word batches, phrases, and one- or two-character emojis — along with time limits.

Hidden Words used to be connected to Instagram, so if users muted a word or phrase on one platform, it would also be muted on the other. With this update, users can now customize what gets filtered on each platform — including content in their feed, search results, profiles, and replies.

Mosseri explained on Threads, “Threads is about encouraging open exchange of ideas, and for that to happen, people need tools that let them shape their experience in a way that makes them feel comfortable expressing themselves.”

The update also gives Threads users the option to temporarily “snooze” certain words without blocking them forever. There’s a 30-day time limit option, and the platform will show how many days are left before the filter expires.

This can be especially handy if you want to avoid spoilers for new movies, TV shows, or games — or steer clear of viral drama in your online communities — without having to completely step away from social media.

Unlike Threads, Instagram doesn’t offer this temporary filter option yet. However, it does resemble similar features found on rival platform X (formerly Twitter), where users can mute words for a day, a week, or 30 days.

Mosseri says the update is now live — though it’s not showing up on all Threads accounts just yet, so it may take a little while to roll out for everyone.
