Google’s research tool, NotebookLM—which gained popularity for its unique AI-generated podcasts—is officially getting a mobile app on May 20, 2025. You can already pre-register for the Android or iOS version, and it will automatically download to your device on the first day of Google I/O 2025.

Google seems to be putting a lot of effort into bringing every feature that is core to its web version inside its app, according to listings on both the Play Store and the App Store. You’ll be able to upload content from various sources (like PDFs, website URLs, YouTube videos, and copied text), and interact with them using NotebookLM, which is powered by Gemini. Whether you want to ask specific questions, create study guides, or generate audio overviews (like the well-known podcasts), it’s all possible within the app.

NotebookLM started its journey at Google I/O 2023 under the name Project Tailwind. Since then, it has gradually evolved from a research project into a full-fledged product. It was launched under the name of NotebookLM in December 2023, and the audio-over feature was added in September 2024. By April 2025, it was available in over 50 languages. The release of a dedicated app is the strongest sign yet that the service is here to stay.

It is the trustworthiness of NotebookLM, especially when contrasted with other tools based on Gemini, that distinguishes it truly and ensures its success. That’s because its answers are always based on documents and sources that you choose. Basically, the possibilities of AI fabricating things are hugely brought down, and it makes checking the answers against the sources within the app exceedingly easy to do.

Google has already hinted that I/O 2025 will be Gemini-centric, with Android announcements being presented in a separate stream. So, there’s a good chance that NotebookLM won’t be the only AI product getting attention on May 20. Still, we’ll have to wait and see whether Google has a more concrete pitch, like “an AI that helps you digest long PDFs.”
