WhatsApp has stated that it will stop support for three iPhones by 2025. So if you are using any one of these devices, you need to upgrade to a new phone for further use of the app. Here’s everything you need to know.

Which iPhone Models Are Affected?

The three iPhones losing support are:

  • iPhone 5s
  • iPhone 6
  • iPhone 6s

These models were released between 2013 and 2014, making them all 10 years or older. They can no longer be updated to the operating system version WhatsApp will soon require.

Do people still use these cellphones?

The iPhone 6 was one of the most successful models, with over 220 million sold. It is the third best-selling iPhone of all time. The vast majority of people do not use these older models anymore, but they nonetheless add to the historic success of the iPhone.

What’s Happening with WhatsApp?

According to WABetaInfo, WhatsApp has started notifying users with older iOS versions that they will need to update their devices.

Currently, WhatsApp supports iOS 12 and later, but upcoming updates will require iOS 15.1 or newer to work properly. Users with older iPhones are being given a five-month notice period to upgrade their software (if possible) or switch to a new device. For example, the iPhone 7 and all newer models are compatible with iOS 15.1, so they will continue to support WhatsApp.

For What Purpose Has WhatsApp Made This Change?

The reason for this updated version is primarily the advanced APIs and technologies used by newer iOS versions, which actually enable WhatsApp to release fresh features and optimize the app. By getting rid of older operating systems, it can now implement certain functionalities that were not feasible on outdated operating systems.

When Will This Change Happen?

WhatsApp has confirmed the change will take effect on May 5, 2025. From that date, devices running software versions older than iOS 15.1 will no longer be supported.

How to Upgrade and Save Your Chats?

If you’re planning to switch to a supported device, you can back up your WhatsApp chats on iCloud and use WhatsApp’s Chat Transfer feature to restore your messages and media on the new phone. Detailed instructions can be found on WhatsApp’s Help Center.

If you’re using an older iPhone, now’s the time to plan your upgrade to ensure uninterrupted access to WhatsApp and its latest features!
